April 15th PART TWO

Please see the post on the concert band online menu about switching meetings to Microsoft TEAMS.

April 15th - PART ONE

Some information about marks.  As of today, teachers have been instructed to create a mark in Powerschool called "BASELINE."  This mark entry (baseline) is your grade as it stood in band on March 13th.  We have been instructed to continue to mark assignments as per usual and input these grades into Powerschool.  In June we will be comparing your year end mark and your "Baseline" mark from March 13th.  As per our "clarified: instructions from the division:

  1. Student’s baseline mark, as at March 13th 2020, can be increased through their learning opportunities during the period of learning at home.
  2. Assignments or assessments that may bring down the student baseline mark from March 13th will still be documented in the grade-book  in order to monitor progress and communicate with parents, but will not impact the baseline grade from March 13th.
  3. All students will be required to engage in remote learning.
  4. All students who do not engage in remote learning will be required to undertake recovery learning next school year.
What does that mean for you in Jazz Band?
  1. I will continue to take attendance in our TEAM (Sykpe) meetings as a method of recording your involvement in our in-class discussions.  Your attendance will be recorded as a "check mark"
  2. Each Episode will be counted in your mark and will receive an separate line in Powerschool.
SO.... if at the end of these 10 Episodes your mark has been raised from the "BASELINE" mark, you will receive the higher of the two.

PLEASE NOTE: I will be marking your assignments after I have read through them and recording the mark in my grade book.  I will not be printing these or returning them to your portfolio. There are 59 jazz band students at roughly 5 pages per assignments = 295 pages per Epidode for a total of 2,950 pages of printing for all 10 Episodes.  That's a bit much.

ALSO:  I will be going over the assignment during our meeting the following week.  Once I have gone over the answers, you will be unable to submit your work for a mark.  If submitted after we have discussed al the answers you will only receive  a check mark indicating that you did submit it.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

April 13th

BIG Band  will be meeting every Wednesday at 3:00PM

The PLAN for the remainder of the year:

After receiving such positive feedback from students about the mini lessons I have taught about Jazz History, specifically this year where I took a gamble and expanded it into a unit, I have decided that it is high time that we fill in the rest of your historical jazz knowledge.  The series you are about to watch covers all the bases - from Jazz music in its infancy in New Orleans to the explosion of Swing during the Jazz Age to Ellington to Mingus to Miles…. it’s all here.

I have done my best to space out the assignments to cover all 10 videos. You could cram them all.  You could cheat somehow I’m sure, but you won’t find the answers on the net as I actually sat down and made each of these assignments myself…. and it took me forever.  How about this? You could hold a Jazz Party over FaceTime/ WhatsApp or Discord and watch them with friends and fill in the answers together. However you go about this, all that matters is that you gain some of this knowledge and come to Jazz next year just a touch more enlightened.

WHAT TO DO:

Click on the assignment link below and open the google doc on your device and copy it into Word/ Pages/ another Google Doc or whatever you use to type assignments.  Then click on the link to the right of each number - for example video #1 is called GUMBO.  I suggest watching full screen and ignore the writing to the right; however, I thought it might be helpful for you.  Then fill in the blanks in BOLD ALL CAPS and send it to me at greg.edwards@sjasd.ca by the date specified as a .PDF.  You could also print it and write in the answers, but I still would like it sent to me as a .PDF. (take pictures of your answers then put those pics in a Word or Pages doc and then export as .PDF)  No matter how you do it, PDF only please to greg.edwards@sjasd.ca.

We will be discussing the answers for each assignment at our weekly ZOOM meetings - beginning with Episode #1 on April 22nd

As always, if you need any help, please do not hesitate to get a hold of me.

IF FOR ANY REASON THE VIDEOS WILL NOT WORK, YOU CAN FIND THEM ALL HERE: JAZZ A FILM SERIES BY KEN BURNS  JUST OPEN THE LINK AND SCROLL THROUGH UNTIL YOU FIND THE EPISODE YOU NEED.
