Practising and reading music may help sustain good memory and the ability to solve complex tasks, their study says.<div><br />In their report, published in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/gps.6061">International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry,</a> they say music should be considered as part of a lifestyle approach to maintain the brain. More than 1,100 people aged over 40, with a mean age of 68, were studied.Scientists at the University of Exeter observed their brain function data as part of a <a href="https://www.protectstudy.org.uk/">wider study</a> that has been finding out how brains age, and why people develop dementia.<br />They looked at the effects of playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening to music, and musical ability. The researchers compared the cognitive data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had.Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefitted the most, which may be because of the "multiple cognitive demands" of the activity. </div><div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i><span style="font-size: medium;"><u>Playing the piano or keyboard appeared to be particularly beneficial, while brass and woodwind instruments were good too</u>. </span></i></b></div></div><div><b><i><u><br /></u></i></b>Simply listening to music did not appear to help cognitive health.</div><div><br />The benefit seen with singing might be partly because of the known social aspects of being in a choir or group, the researchers say. "Because we have such sensitive brain tests for this study, we are able to look at individual aspects of the brain function, such as short-term memory, long-term memory, and problem-solving and how engaging music effects that," lead author Prof Anne Corbett told the BBC. "Certainly this confirms and cements on a much larger scale what we already know about the benefits of music. <br />"Specifically, playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and people who continue to play into an older age saw an additional benefit," she said. <br /><br />In the study, people who read music regularly had better numerical memory.</div><div><br />Prof Corbett said: "Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs to be exercised, and learning to read music is a bit like learning a new language, it's challenging." Researchers did not test potential benefits of taking up a musical hobby for the first time later in life, but Prof Corbett said she believed, based on current evidence, it would be "very beneficial". Prof Corbett said that, although more research was needed, promoting musical education could form a "valuable" part of a public health message, as would encouraging older adults to return to music in later life. "The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia, and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that. This study does suggest that it could be part of a much wider lifestyle approach to improving brain health as you age." "We regularly play at memory cafes so have seen the effect that our music has on people with memory loss and, as older musicians ourselves, we have no doubt that continuing with music into older age has played an important role in keeping our brains healthy."</div><div>The study was supported by the <a href="https://www.nihr.ac.uk/">National Institute for Health and Care Research.</a></div><div><br /></div><div>You can see the article on BBC's web site - <a href="https://bbc.com/news/health-68105868" target="_blank">HERE</a></div>Band At Westwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03847540084259637773noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8514471929643368248.post-13915283019725220202024-01-08T13:00:00.000-08:002024-01-08T13:00:43.196-08:00Band gives you the TOP skills<p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIzAy3tStqt1AL6mT5igk6Fp_JMOSJhqbP_VO5lPZopS586apkxKDwnIWYfAXf3q7uvwrhNE6HXFE8N7u-bHHc7l_RSYCiCyUw98MljthbU5xiOg9U0Rtq_kZQFVCzmYl98u-t6BLxd2tkbl_r3AKxoFqz0uzfQ9epvqt7Ex1yWL-_0ATRWH7rg84S2bs/s1020/job-interview-1-6691276-1702849638509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="573" data-original-width="1020" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIzAy3tStqt1AL6mT5igk6Fp_JMOSJhqbP_VO5lPZopS586apkxKDwnIWYfAXf3q7uvwrhNE6HXFE8N7u-bHHc7l_RSYCiCyUw98MljthbU5xiOg9U0Rtq_kZQFVCzmYl98u-t6BLxd2tkbl_r3AKxoFqz0uzfQ9epvqt7Ex1yWL-_0ATRWH7rg84S2bs/s320/job-interview-1-6691276-1702849638509.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /> Keep your kids in band if you want them prepared for the future according to a study done by the Indeed Hiring Lab.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">"I<span style="caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64); color: #404040;">nterpersonal soft skills are going to be even more important in the age of AI, according to Sadek. I thought I would send a quick e-mail home to welcome you to the start of this year and to give you a few details about our plans and our program.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0cm;"> <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0cm;">For those of you new to the program, you have heard correctly that we have no practice policy here at Westwood. I also strongly discourage students from bringing their instruments home. The band room is open every day from 7 in the morning till 4:00 PM, And all students are welcome to use this room at their leisure. During that time they are encouraged to come here into the band room and get any of the help they need from me. If they'd like to look over some of their parts you are more than welcome to grab one of the six practice rooms and hammer away at anything that's bothering them. Concert Band is the flagship of our program and we look to make students absolutely shine during their performances and competitions. Further to this idea, we ask that all students play on the best reeds they possibly can. As these reeds can be very expensive, I sell them at a significant loss here in the band room for $2 a reed. That said, I will happily give students a read if they do not have $2. As well, for those of you new to our program, our concerts are a lot of fun and also very formal. The only classes that have not had a chance to meet yet are jazz band classes. The Rouge road Renegades begins tomorrow morning at 7:20 AM and meets on even days. This dynamic jazz band is filled with all of our beginning and intermediate members. This is the perfect spot to learn what jazz band is all about and I'm very excited that we have so many people slated to come to practice tomorrow. I have extended an open invitation to all of the members of the concert band to get involved in this exciting opportunity, even if they have yet to register for the course. Once we get our roster settled I will let the office know and they will be placed into the appropriate class. and, just in case you're curious, jazz band is a separate course with full credit toward graduation…. and university entrance (I might also add).<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0cm;"> <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0cm;">Our other jazz ensemble, warrior jazz, meets on odd days at 7:20 AM. She is actively involved in all things music and is also a fine Tenor and Bari sax player. Besides her band prowess, she loves musical theatre and loves to sing as she is a member of the Sr. Divisional Choir. Next, you can catch Rachel on stage as she is playing Ursula in the upcoming production of Little Mermaid at Westwood from May 18 – 20. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Tim Franklin is a Gr. 10 student at Westwood Collegiate who is a percussion specialist. Although his passion is drum set, he has worked very hard on his mallet playing and has now fallen in love with all things mallets. To round out his percussion awesomeness, Tim is also a fine timpani player. His kind and approachable manner allow all the members of his section to feel that they can come to him for help, regardless of their instrument. As a result, it is no big surprise that Tim was named as section leader.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Sr. Honour Band:<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Rachel Tarrant is also a member of this ensemble.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Nathan Varghese is an exceptional gr. 12 trumpet player who is truly at home in the band room at Westwood Collegiate. Nathan is a kind and generous student whose passions helped him and the rest of the members of the Westwood Historical Society produce a documentary about Holocaust survivors here in Winnipeg that will be debuting later this year. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">National Youth Band of Canada<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Nathan Varghese worked very hard this year preparing his audition for the National Youth band of Canada, and we were all very happy when Nathan was selected as a member of this prestigious ensemble. I cannot believe the enthusiasm and energy here at Westwood this year. We are all so thankful to be back in classes and making music together. Everyone involved in these first few classes have felt the great warmth that music brings to our lives. <p></p><p>At this point everyone has an instrument and music and we are already deep into the start of our musical year. Folders have been assigned, music has been distributed and a beautiful noise can be heard from the band room throughout the day.</p><p>As we progress, help is always available at lunch and after school for a mini-lesson or just a quick question. Assignment help and/ or homework assistance is always available.</p><p>First assignments are just around the corner and Gr.9 and 10 students will be working out of a new method book this year... look for a one time payment in cash online shortly to cover our costs. As well, I will be collecting rental and percussion fees at the beginning of October.</p><p>As always, we are going to work hard to yearn your praise and applause as we prepare our music for you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest convenience. For specific class information, you just have to click on the class drop down menu for the latest intel.</p><p>Fingers closed for a live performance this year.</p><p>Greg Edwards - <a href="mailto:greg.edwards@sjasd.ca">greg.edwards@sjasd.ca</a></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Band At Westwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03847540084259637773noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8514471929643368248.post-85224164159789321462021-06-30T07:07:00.002-07:002021-06-30T07:07:27.991-07:00Westwood Bands in the Newspaper (Headliner and Metro)<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="section" style="background-color: black;"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDdF5aO7LQ-lJFrs5VUqysd2ks-DLJaX1KuEqn6AnoZ7eAtNhDFgbHBvS7FPkePx4O0GVzbUDYlmqvHyec4eBmhiosPyDFPdYId19CkSrmH1wbu2zCJ_QA8nTBb6MP69W7_PodtG0MPyc/s1200/gp-Band1-June30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1200" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDdF5aO7LQ-lJFrs5VUqysd2ks-DLJaX1KuEqn6AnoZ7eAtNhDFgbHBvS7FPkePx4O0GVzbUDYlmqvHyec4eBmhiosPyDFPdYId19CkSrmH1wbu2zCJ_QA8nTBb6MP69W7_PodtG0MPyc/w400-h266/gp-Band1-June30.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></p>A handful of Greg Edwards's band students hold the group's awards at Westwood Collegiate on June 22. margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">Music educator Greg Edwards on the “resiliency” and “indefatigable” spirit of students—and teachers—through a tumultuous year. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">The end of the school year is nearly here, and just before closing the book on one we’re surely not to forget, Classic 107 spoke with band director at Westwood Collegiate Greg Edwards about the year that was — one which, despite the many, many challenges kept the music going. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;"><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> “There’s a reason that Manitoba is the centre of music education in Canada,” says Edwards, who describes his colleagues across the province as some of the most “wonderful, brilliant and resilient” educators in the country. “We’re very lucky to have that kind of community.” </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">In a year that “takes the cake” when it came to pivots and changes, Edwards, like all educators, rolled with the punches. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;"></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">From physically-distanced seating and reduced class sizes at the beginning of the year, to Zoom rehearsals, to outdoor performances, there was a bit of everything this year in the real life and online band room. Following public health guidelines, the safety of students was always of the utmost priority. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">“They could keep playing their instruments,” said Edwards. “I think that was the key thing, that’s what they signed up for, that’s what they wanted to do in band.” </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">And, after a clean-sweep at the Manitoba Band Association online Family of Festivals, it was clear that students were playing their instruments very well. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">The three concert bands and three jazz bands at Westwood Collegiate all received 5 star performances at the festival—a first for Edwards in his more than 25 years attending. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;"></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">“That was wild,” says and enthusiastic Edwards. </p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px;">Find the full, year end Westwood Collegiate band recital below. </span><p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">In response a group of concerned parents is rallying to bring band class back to schools, wind instruments included, saying small groups should be allowed now.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">“We can do it safely. We’ve toed the line, we’ve been very good for the last year. The kids have not played for a year and they miss it. There’s still a lot of parents paying for musical instruments,” said parent Melissa Davidson, who has two teenagers in band.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="background-color: #666666;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p>

<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">That has her concerned about the mental health of all students and the long-term impact of not being able to play together.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">“It’s one ingredient of a bigger recipe, so you can do some scales, but you really can’t be part of that creative process by yourself,” Davidson said.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial public health officer, said when it comes to the resumption of band practices, public health orders don’t apply to schools in the same way, but they are part of a system that relies on public health advice. </span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">"We know that certainly things like wind instruments, singing and things can increase risk of transmission. So we're working with this real cautious approach to try to ensure we can keep kids in school, to continue to open things up and as our numbers continue to decline that we'll be able to do more and more of this,” Roussin said.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">However, executive director of the Manitoba Band Association, Chelsey Hiebert, said students would continue to wear masks, remain physically distanced and use bell covers over the end of instruments.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">“There’s now extensive research that wasn’t available at the beginning of the shut down that shows there’s mitigations that can be put in place that can almost eliminate the risk od aerosol exchange in wind playing” Hiebert said. </span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="background-color: #666666;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p>

<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">“For a lot of these students and a lot of these children, as parents are noticing first hand, they’ve lost their entire social network. They’ve lost a way into which they participate with their peers and a way to just decompress and relax from other activities,” Hiebert said.</span></p>
<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; background-color: #666666; font-kerning: none;">Ross Brownlee, a music teacher at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, said the absent sound of the wind and brass instruments can be deafening. </span></p>
